Solar Power for Bo-Kaap, Cape Town – 30 kW Commercial Solar Installation
First Energy Solar Installers has completed a 30 kW grid-tied commercial solar installation in the Bo-Kaap, on the edge of Cape Town’s CBD. Twenty-one 610 W glass-on-glass panels feed a 30 kW three-phase Fox ESS hybrid inverter, and the system is expected to generate at least 21,675 kWh a year – avoiding more than 9 tons of CO₂ annually.
The brief: commercial solar on a compact inner-city roof
Inner-city commercial premises in the Bo-Kaap and CBD have limited, often flat roof space, three-phase supply and daytime-heavy consumption on City of Cape Town commercial tariffs. The brief was to get the most generation out of a small footprint, keep the installation discreet in a heritage area, and leave room for battery backup to keep trading through outages.
The solution: 21 high-output panels on a 30 kW three-phase hybrid inverter
- 21 × 610 W glass-on-glass solar panels (12.8 kWp)
- 1 × 30 kW three-phase Fox ESS hybrid inverter, installed grid-tied and ready for a battery
- Low-profile aluminium rail mounting with SSEG-compliant DC and AC protection
- Online monitoring through the Fox ESS app
- Electrical Certificate of Compliance and City of Cape Town SSEG registration handled by First Energy
High-output 610 W modules were chosen to maximise yield from the available roof area, and the 30 kW three-phase inverter balances the building’s load across all three phases while leaving capacity for more panels and a battery.
The results
- Estimated annual generation: 21,675 kWh – roughly 1,800 kWh a month
- Carbon avoided: over 9 tons of CO₂ per year
- Daytime energy charges reduced across all three phases
Commercial savings depend on the tariff and on how much consumption falls in daylight hours, which is why we analyse the account and log the load before designing. See how we model payback for commercial solar.

Frequently asked questions
Can you install solar on a heritage building in the Bo-Kaap?
Yes, with care. We use low-profile mounting on roof planes not visible from the street where possible, and we advise on any heritage or City approvals that apply to the specific building.
Can a battery be added to this Bo-Kaap system for load shedding?
Yes. The 30 kW Fox ESS inverter is a three-phase hybrid, so a high-voltage lithium battery can be added at any time to keep critical loads running through outages.
Does a commercial solar system in Cape Town need SSEG registration?
Yes. All grid-connected systems in the City of Cape Town supply area must be registered as small-scale embedded generation. First Energy handles the application, the Certificate of Compliance and commissioning.
