Solar Power for Muizenberg Business Park – 100 kW Commercial Solar Installation (Phase 2)

First Energy Solar Installers has completed Phase 2 of the solar roll-out at Muizenberg Business Park in Cape Town’s South Peninsula: a 100 kW grid-tied installation of 225 × 575 W glass-on-glass panels (129 kWp) on a 100 kW three-phase inverter. The system is expected to generate at least 218,903 kWh a year – cutting the park’s carbon emissions by more than 90 tons annually.

The brief: expand a working business-park installation

Business parks have the ideal profile for commercial solar – large, uncluttered roofs and tenants whose consumption runs from early morning to late afternoon on City of Cape Town commercial tariffs. Phase 2 had to add 100 kW alongside the existing installation without interrupting tenants, tie into the park’s metering and SSEG registration, and leave a path for further phases.

The solution: 225 panels on a 100 kW three-phase inverter

• 225 × 575 W glass-on-glass solar panels (129 kWp)
• 1 × 100 kW three-phase grid-tied inverter with two MPPT inputs
• Roof-mounted on aluminium rails with SSEG-compliant DC and AC protection and surge protection
• Online monitoring of generation and consumption
• Electrical Certificate of Compliance and City of Cape Town SSEG registration handled by First Energy

The 129 kWp array is over-sized for the 100 kW inverter so the park gets strong generation in winter and the shoulder hours, when the tenants’ load is still high.

• Estimated annual generation: 218,903 kWh – roughly 18,250 kWh a month
• Carbon avoided: over 90 tons of CO₂ per year
• Daytime energy charges for the park reduced in proportion
