First Energy Solar Installers has completed a 50 kW grid-tied solar installation at a commercial building in Capricorn Business Park, Muizenberg, ten minutes from our Kirstenhof head office. Sixty 540 W glass-on-glass panels (32.4 kWp) feed a 50 kW three-phase inverter, and the system is expected to generate at least 54,821 kWh a year – cutting the client’s carbon emissions by more than 22 tons annually.

The brief: a first phase with room to grow

The client wanted to start with an array that covered the building’s current daytime load on a City of Cape Town commercial tariff, on an inverter with the capacity to expand as the business and its tenants grew. The brief was a 50 kW inverter with a 32 kWp first-phase array.

The solution: 60 panels on a 50 kW three-phase inverter

• 60 × 540 W glass-on-glass solar panels (32.4 kWp)
• 1 × 50 kW three-phase grid-tied inverter
• Roof-mounted on aluminium rails with SSEG-compliant DC and AC protection and surge protection
• Online monitoring of generation and consumption
• Electrical Certificate of Compliance and City of Cape Town SSEG registration handled by First Energy

The 50 kW inverter can take roughly double the current array, so the next phase is a matter of adding panels rather than replacing equipment.

The results

• Estimated annual generation: 54,821 kWh – roughly 4,570 kWh a month
• Carbon avoided: over 22 tons of CO₂ per year
• Daytime consumption largely supplied by solar, with inverter capacity for a second phase

Can the system be expanded later?
Yes. The 50 kW inverter has capacity for roughly double the current array, so a second phase only needs more panels and the updated SSEG registration.

Does a commercial solar system need SSEG registration?
Yes. Every grid-connected system must be registered as small-scale embedded generation with the City of Cape Town or the local municipality, using an approved inverter. First Energy handles the application, the Certificate of Compliance and commissioning.

Can the business claim the Section 12B tax allowance?
Yes. Solar PV generating under 1 MW can be written off in full against taxable income in the year it is brought into use (the enhanced 125% allowance ended on 28 February 2025). Confirm the treatment with your accountant.
